The dissertation at hand entiteled “How one fights determines what one wins’ - (Non)violent resistance in revolutionary situations and its prospects for sustainable democratization” deals with the long-term consequences of peaceful resistance in transition processes on the following democracy.
The cumulative dissertation consists of six independent, but linked publications.
The overarching research question of the dissertation, which unites all papers, is whether and due to which mechanisms different forms of resistance (Modes of Resistance) against authoritarian regimes have different prospects of sustainable democratization.
The basic assumption is that peaceful resistance in so-called revolutionary situations has a positive effect on the consolidation of the following democracy.
This assumption is varified with a large-N survival analysis. The underlying mechanisms on which the effect is based on are explored in complementary case studies.
