Founded in 2000 and located next to Disneyland Resort Paris, France, the community of Val d’Europe simultaneously constitutes the result of French efforts at stimulating multipolar urban development and the Walt Disney Company’s long-standing involvement in urban planning. Drawing on the design strategy of theming and the model of American suburbs, Val d’Europe is very much distinct from the previously realized sectors of the “ville nouvelle” of Marne-la-Vallée, which accentuates the role of the Walt Disney Company in its development – namely, that of a catalyst in the “import” of theming and suburbanization into French urban planning and design.
