Barbara Schmitz deals with the ways in which the themes of death and dying are reflected in Old Testament literature. In the first section, she engages with a concept of death that springs not from a view of the Res-urrection, but rather from the perspective of death as the cut-off point of an incomplete life experience. In addition, she explores the themes of death and dying in the context of the experience of unearned and unjust levels of suffering, using the Book of Job as an example. This ultimately leads to a discussion about Sheol, the place of the dead in the Old Testament. In the light of these examples it becomes clear that speaking about death and dying in the Old Testament means speaking about life itself and keeping the experience of the living in mind.
