In this article, the authors present a means for the adequate modeling of video traffic in service-integrating communication networks using semi-Markov processes. This type of stochastic process is able to reflect two important characteristics of video traffic: The distribution and the autocorrelation. The model parameters are computed from given data traces using genetic programming in combination with an evolutionary optimization method. The semi- Markov models can be efficiently analyzed using different factorization approaches. On the one hand, we consider the polynomial factorization relying on the computation of roots of the so-called characteristic polynomial. On the other hand, we apply the Wiener-Hopf factorization, which considers two-phase distributions. Numerical instabilities, such as round-off errors, are likely to occur and can lead to wrong results. These difficulties are handled using verification techniques relying on intervals as basic computation units instead of floating-point numbers. This way, reliable results can be achieved, such as the buffer overflow probability at a network element, e.g. a switch or router.
