Many-demes limit for interacting diffusions with applications in population genetics

We study the behavior of systems of interacting diffusions as the number of diffusions converges to infinity. In contrast to the majority of the available literature, we do not assume that the involved diffusions have the same distribution or that they are of the same size. Instead, we prove that in the sparse regime where only a few diffusions start outside of an attainable absorbing state, the system of interacting diffusions converges in distribution to a forest of excursions. In particular, initial independence propagates in the limit and results in a forest of independent trees. We thereby observe a propagation of chaos phenomenon under nonclassical assumptions. We further establish an upper bound for a C^m-norm, m in {0,1,2}, of the semigroups of diffusions with square-root diffusion coefficients in terms of the C^m-norm of the drift coefficients and of the squared diffusion coefficients. The systems of interacting diffusions considered in this thesis are motivated by applications in mathematical biology. These diffusions model the evolution of frequencies of certain traits in a spatially structured population. We apply our results to two examples. In the first example, the diffusion models the frequency of an altruistic defense trait. The second example is the Wright-Fisher diffusion with selection and rare mutations.
