Sufficient optimality conditions for nonlinear optimization problems

We study an abstract nonlinear optimal control problem in Banach and Hilbert spaces, respectively. We assume the existence of a discrete counterpart to this problem, which fulfills certain approximation properties regarding the cost functional and the control to state operator. We also assume that we can compute a local solution uh for this discrete problem. After introducing the mathemical background to this type of problems we develop sufficient optimality conditions of second order. These conditions depend only on the known discrete solution uh and other computable quantities, which allows us to check if they are satisfied. We demonstrate the necessary computations for a one-dimensional problem class up to the point were they can be applied to a concrete example. Then we introduce the numerical methods we want to put to use throughout our numerical experiments, namely the Finite Element Method for the discretization of infinite dimensional function spaces and the Lagrange-Newton SQP method to solve nonlinear problems. We present the numerical results and analyse them with respect to the order of convergence of the occuring errors and the sufficient conditions.
