The author argues that vocationalization of work as a constitutive and (until now) inherent factor of cultural evolution began to spread out in the ancient Mesopotamian and Egyptian cultures. In the following, selected and in particular, recent research to vocational division of work in the Near Eastern cultures will be presented and discussed under aspects of vocationalization of work. This retrospect on the far past is followed by the attempt to differentiate the conceptual design of vocationalism. The reference frame stresses the cultural dimension of vocationalism. From the author’s point of view research on vocational education and training (VET) should not focus on the superficial discussion about the end of vocationalization. Priority should be given to modernization of VET both under conditions of flexibility and according to the principles of vocationally qualified and cultivated work.
