The firing process of refractory bricks is very time-consuming and cost-intensive. Restrictive factors for the firing of bricks without cracks are the temperature differences in the refractory materials during heating and cooling. These temperature differences are the most important reason for thermo-mechanical stresses in the material, besides the material-specific volume changes, such as during modification changes. In order to avoid cracks during the heating or cooling-down phases, the temperature fields and stress fields for the green brick (in the unfired state) during the heating-up stage as well as for the fired brick during the cooling-down phase need to be determined considering the state of the microstructure, and must be compared to the admissible stresses. For this purpose a FEM simulation model is generated with the ANSYS program. Then this model is applied to the firing process of two typical qualities of fireclay bricks. In doing so the state of the firing process is analyzed and proposals for optimization of the process are derived which take into account the critical temperature ranges during heating and cooling-down phases as well as temperature ranges with reserves in the rate of heating and cooling-down. Basis for these calculations is the knowledge of the thermo-analytical characteristics as well as the thermophysical and mechanical properties of the refractory materials as a function of the firing parameters and the state of the microstructure for both the heating phase (green body) and the cooling-down (fired material). Thus, these characteristics must be mainly determined by experimental measurements.
