The article analyses the current world-economic crisis by discuss­ing the concept of supercycles or Kondratiev waves. It examines the possibility of formulating predictions on the basis of this con­cept, highlighting its relevance to technical and political develop­ments since the 1970s. The concept of long waves is also compared to alternative models that currently dominate accounts of the glo­bal crisis.
