H–H bzw.

Metal-substituted silylenes are interesting target compounds because their electronic structure differs significantly from conventional organo-substituted silylenes due to the electropositive metal substituents that are introduced. Unfortunately, the synthesis and isolation of such compounds remains challenging. Gallandiyl DDPGa (DDP = HC[C(Me)NDipp]2, Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3), which can be used both as a one-electron reducing agent and as a ligand in molecular chemistry, is a promising reagent because it is also capable of oxidative addition reactions. The reaction of DDPGa with various silicon tetrahalides results in the formation of complexes of the general type DDP(X)GaSiX3 A-1 - A-2 and [DDP(X)Ga]2SiX2 A-4 - A-5 (X = Cl, Br). Reaction of [DDP(Br)Ga]2SiBr2A-5 with one additional equivalent of DDPGa, results in activation of the DDP ligand, afforded the insertion compound [L(Br)Ga]Si[Ga(Br)][CH=C(Me)NAr][C(Me)=NAr] B. The formation of this compound indicates the presence of a metal-substituted silylene [DDP(Br)Ga]2Si: that is formed in situ. Moreover, the free silylene could not be isolated, but it was indirectly identified by reactions with different reagents. Therefore, the reaction of DDPGa with an atmosphere of CO leads to the formation of the first room temperature stable silicon carbonyl complex [DDP(Br)Ga]2Si-CO 1. Further reactivity studies showed that [DDP(Br)Ga]2Si-CO 1 can act as a "masked" silylene. It formed with dihydrogen and ammonia, under H–H and N–H bond activations, respectively, [DDP(Br)Ga]2SiH22 and [DDP(Br)Ga]2Si(H)NH23. In addition, the reaction with the isolobal isocyanide CyNC allowed the formation of a silicon isocyanide complex [DDP(Br)Ga]2Si–CNCy 4, whereas the reaction with methyllithium leads to another silicon carbonyl complex [DDP(Me)Ga]2Si–CO 5.

Formation of the room temperature stable silicon-carbonyl complexes is fundamentally based upon the electropositive properties of the DDP(X)Ga ligands, which results in a higher electron density at the silicon center, necessary for a
p-backbonding to the CO. As the homoleptic silylene [DDP(Br)Ga]2Si: couldn’t be isolated, a corresponding heteroleptic silylene [DDP(X)Ga]RSi: should be synthesized, in which R is a sterically demanding amidinate ligand. The reaction of DDPM (M = Al, Ga) with the reported amidinate-substituted silylene PhC(NtBu)2SiCl VI results with insertion of the metal into the Si–Cl bond by formation of the heteroleptic metallasilylene of the type PhC(NtBu)2SiM(Cl)DDP 6 and 7. In addition, we investigated their ability to activate small molecules in reactions with CO2, N2O, TMSN3 (TMS = SiMe3) and P4.
