Bildgebung mit der Magnetresonanztomographie ist und bleibt ein extrem spannendes – und im wahrsten Sinne auch anschauliches – Forschungsfeld nicht nur im medizinischen Bereich, sondern auch zur Darstellung kognitiver Prozesse. Ein wesentliches Ziel der Medizin ist die Entdeckung und Behandlung verschiedener Veränderungen und Erkrankungen, bevor auffällige Symptome auftreten und die damit einhergehenden Körperschädigungen vorangeschritten sind. Die MRT wird sicherlich eine zentrale Rolle zur Erreichung dieses Ziels einnehmen.
Imaging with the help of magnetic resonance is an exciting research area, not only within medicine but also for depicting various cognitive processes of the brain. Each day, hundreds of thousands of patients benefit from this technology. The recent and ongoing introduction of even stronger magnets to enhance the signal from tissue might finally enable the routine in vivo imaging of other nuclei besides hydrogen. Especially promising is the conjunction of improved imaging techniques with the development of new targeted contrast agents that are able to dock to specific receptors within the body. Even the smallest cancerous metastases, which thus far have remained occult to conventional imaging, might be discovered with these techniques. A principal goal of medicine is the identification and treatment of various diseases before noticeable symptoms and associated tissue damage have emerged. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) will certainly play a vital role in achieving this goal.
