Due to the occurrence of resistencies, bacterial infections are becoming increasingly difficult to treat and therefore represent a major clinical challenge. The application of silver as an antibacterial agent is therefore becoming increasingly popular. By combining silver with the biocompatible material calcium phosphate, we synthesized nanoparticles with good antibacterial action. However, a thorough analysis revealed that silver is not only toxic for bacteria, but for human cells too, i.e. healthy tissue. This was also the case for silver salts and for nanoparticles consisting of pure silver. This unexpected result requires a re-evaluation of silver as an agent against bacterial infections.
