In this thesis a system consisting of a hydrogen storage tank and a high temperature fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) was investigated. The hydrogen storage tank was charged with the complex hydride NaAlH4. This solid hydrogen storage material was doped with 4 mol.% TiCl3 in ball milling process to improve its performance. Both system components, the hydrogen storage tank and the fuel cell were thermally coupled using thermal oil, as fluid for heat transport. The driving force for the heat transfer via thermal oil was the temperature difference between the heat of hydrogen conversion in the fuel cell and the dehydrogenation reaction in the hydrogen storage tank. The HT-PEMFC was a 28 cell stack equiped with PBI MEAs and a cooling system based on liquid coolant. The fuel cell is normally operated in the temperature range from 120 to 190°C and the hydride NaAlH4 releases hydrogen with reasonable kinetics above 120°C in the first dehydrogenation step. The nominal electrical load of the fuel cell was 260 W. The final version of the constructed hydrogen storage tank contained 2676,8 g of doped NaAlH4. Five dehydrogenation tests of the thermally coupled system were carried out. In one of the tests the electrical load of the fuel cell was varied between 165 and 240W. The fuel cell was operated in an another experiment in the vicinity of 260W for approx. 150 min. The highest gravimetric hydrogen storage capacity achieved in the dehydrogenation tests was 3,04 mass.% ( kgH2/kgNaAlH4) which corresponded to 0,25 mass.% ( kgH2/kgsystem) and 8,8 kg/m3 ( kgH2/m^3system) of the gravimetric and volumetric hydrogen capacity of the total tank system respectively. The complex hydride was prepared by Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung in Mülheim an der Ruhr and the HT-PEMFC was manufactured by Zentrum für BrennstozellenTechnik GmbH in Duisburg. The main goals of the thesis were to design and to construct a hydrogen storage tank, that uses a complex hydride as a hydrogen storage media and to couple it thermally with a HT-PEMFC and finally to investigate the assembled system under different electrical load of the fuel cell.
