The experiences at the threshold of the transition from school to vocational education are of particular importance for the professional career of youths. A higher-than-average dropout rate in the professions of retailing and in particular the large amount of apprenticeship discontinuations during the first few months of vocational education suggests that many youths do not succeed in their integration into the apprenticeship. Against this background the analysis of the entrance phase of vocational education is subject of the research at hand. The thesis has been written within the scope of the research project “ProBE” (Problems of apprentices in the entrance phase of vocational education in retailing) of the department of Vocational Education Research of the University of Duisburg-Essen.
The project aims amongst others at describing and analyzing the challenges of the entrance phase of vocational education from the apprentice’s perspective. During the research project a total of two surveys have been conducted. The research at hand focuses on the second survey set up as a standardized questionnaire survey. It builds on a first survey with problem-centered interviews. Goals of the questionnaire survey are to test the assumptions formulated as result of the interviews as well as to conduct a statistical analysis of the problems found. It is analyzed how the apprenticeship beginners deal with the new requirements of vocational education in retailing und how they either master the emerging challenges or get in danger of failing. The concept development of the questionnaire survey builds on the model of the entrance phase of vocational education in retailing (MEBE ) that has been developed in the course of the research project. In the scope of the study several problem areas are indentified, in which the challenges for the apprentices are accumulating. These are, for example, areas like „Knowledge Deficits“ or „Role Finding“, in which experienced conflicts and recognition deficits complicate the development of a sustainable role perception for the apprentices at the entrance of vocational education. Furthermore, many of the beginners of an apprenticeship perceive the fear of making mistakes as a heavy burden. It is not unusual that the perceived challenges result in the consideration of a discontinuation of the retailing apprenticeship. In the first few months of the apprenticeship one in three of the respondents already consider a discontinuation of the apprenticeship. The various causes for these considerations include among others the working hours in retailing, dissatisfaction with the tasks to be executed and difficulties with the apprenticeship supervisors or line managers. From a vocational education perspective and based on the findings of the survey conclusions for the design of the entrance phase of vocational education in retailing in a way that fosters development are being proposed for discussion at the end of the thesis.
