Religion wird problematisiert sowohl als Begriff wie als kulturelle Erscheinung. Für das Verständnis wesentlich ist die Wahrnehmung dreier Momente: ihrer personalen Innerlichkeit, ihrer Ausrichtung auf eine transzendente Macht und ihres geschichtlich-sozialen Charakters. Jede dieser Hinsichten spielt eine Rolle in der Kritik wie der Verantwortung von Religion.
Both the term "religion" and the corresponding cultural phenomena are considered to be problematic. Three factors are fundamental for an apppropriate understanding of religion: its reality in a person's inwardness, its orientation towards transcendence, and its socio-historical character. Each of these respects is of crucial importance in the criticism as well as the justification of religion.
