Networks of Lifelines − Designing Digital Connectivity for Depressed Users
Meaningful human relationships are crucial to mental wellbeing, yet they require activity to be kept alive which can be difficult for people who suffer from the lack of drive that characterises depression. Hence, this paper discusses the suitability of social media for bridging these difficulties and helping depressed people generate and maintain social connectedness in a salutogenic way. Starting from inquiries into potential negative effects of existing social media on this specific target group, it is shown how a connecting app could and should be designed to meet their needs. As empirical basis we draw from individual and group interviews with people who suffer from depressive symptoms and pilot studies testing parts of the concept under development. The preliminary results of our ongoing research presented below show certain key elements for connecting this group that seem promising for further technical development.
