This anticipation effect is largest in tight labor markets but does not spill over within couples. In contrast, anticipating job termination allows workers to switch positions without suffering unemployment. Leveraging variation in the industry-specific labor market tightness before the job termination, this paper shows that switching from a terminated position before its closure offsets over 70 percent of the negative labor market effects of the job termination, and mitigates its entire mental burden. 4950 https://doi.org/10.17185/duepublico/82169$xR$3Volltext$534 4950 https://nbn-resolving.org/urn:nbn:de:hbz:465-20240708-093213-1$xR$3Volltext$534 4961 https://duepublico2.uni-due.de/receive/duepublico_mods_00082169 5051 330 5051 610 5550 anticipation 5550 JEL classification: D84, I18, J28, J63 5550 job loss 5550 mental health 5550 unemployment
