Using fictional creatures, we can control the number and properties of characteristics, as well as present students with a context they might consider interesting. Besides creating evolutionary trees from data, students can learn that trees based on morphological characteristics might contradict and trees based on genetic analysis are a more reliable tool in classification. The material used in this learning environment is freely available, so educators can use and customize it freely. Students working with this material declared a high motivation to work with the fictional animals and engaged in very active discussions about different classifications of the dragons.}, note = {We gratefully acknowledge the support of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research under grant number 01PL16075.}, note = {

Thilo Schramm, Anika Jose, Philipp Schmiemann; How to Classify Your Dragons: On Teaching Tree-Reading with the Use of Fantastical Creatures. The American Biology Teacher 2022; 84 (5): 308--311. doi: https://doi.org/10.1525/abt.2022.84.5.308

{\&}{\#}xa0;

1 May 2022

{\&}{\#}xa0;

}, note = {
Version of Record / Verlagsversion
}, note = {
University of California Press

Re-use of your Published Work{\&}{\#}xa0;

Authors rights to re-use their published work is outlined in the journal's author agreement, including:{\&}{\#}xa0;

the right to use the contribution for internal educational, classroom use, or other research purposes of the author's own institution or company

the right to publish the contribution or permit it to be published by other publishers, as part of any book or anthology authored or edited by the author

the right to post the contribution on the author's personal website or within institutional or subject repositories at any time

https://online.ucpress.edu/journals/pages/authors (Stand der Information: 25.09.2023)
}, note = {Supplemental material to this article is available on DuEPublico: https://duepublico2.uni-due.de/receive/duepublico{\_}mods{\_}00074842}, doi = {10.1525/abt.2022.84.5.308}, url = {https://duepublico2.uni-due.de/receive/duepublico_mods_00079077}, url = {https://doi.org/10.1525/abt.2022.84.5.308}, file = {:https://duepublico2.uni-due.de/servlets/MCRFileNodeServlet/duepublico_derivate_00078604/Schramm_et_al_2022_How_to_classify_dragons.pdf:PDF}, language = {en} }
