Both theories are formulated as a system of linear or nonlinear partial differential equations. We present them in a simplified setting and highlight the important role of general a priori inequalities for the solution of the equations. As it turns out, there is one, hitherto unknown inequality, to rule two of the three needed inequalities: Korn’s inequality for incompatible tensor fields. We describe this new inequality and the way in which we have found it.
