This work describes the preparation of porous polymer and carbon nanocomposites and their suitability as adsorber and photocatalyst materials. The composites consist of hydrophilic and hydrophobically modified titanium dioxide nanoparticles that are embedded in the porous structure of the microspheric polymers. Suspension polymerization was used to synthesize porous polymers and polymer nanocomposites. In order to obtain polymer spheres with specific size, BET surface area and pore structure, the parameters like choice of porogen, crosslinker monomer content and type and concentration of stabilizer were varied. In comparison, monoliths were prepared by bulk polymerization in order to evaluate the influences of the additional parameters of suspension polymerization. Styrene and divinylbenzene were chosen as monomers because this combination is well suited for carbonization. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles P25 and T805 (Evonik) were selected as model particles for hydrophilic and hydrophobically modified nanoparticles. By using suitable porogens for polymer synthesis, a stable dispersion in the oil phase of suspension polymerization could be ensured. With the chosen method, the nanoparticles could in situ be integrated into the resulting polymer. To carbonize the porous polymers and polymer nanocomposites, suitable conditions were tested and established to obtain the shape of the particles, the BET surface area and the pore structure. The influence of the high temperature treatment during carbonization process on titaniumdioxide nanoparticles was examined separately in order to determine whether the structure and thus the functionality of the particles is preserved. The polymer and carbon materials produced were tested for their adsorption properties by determining the isotherms of differently substituted phenols. The results of the adsorption affinities and capacities show improved properties of the produced carbon materials compared to activated carbons from literature. Furthermore, the photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide nanocomposites was examined and catalytic conversion of organic structures in water were observed for both polymer composites and carbon composites. In summary, polymer and carbon nanocomposites with the desired variable properties could be prepared. The carbons and carbon nanocomposites produced are suitable as adsorber and photocatalyst materials.
