Micro pollutants are introduced into the environment in many different ways. One path way is the domestic waste water, which introduce the micro pollutants into the treatment plants. The existing mechanical-biological purification on conventional wastewater treatment plants is not sufficient to remove the micro pollutants from the wastewater, so that micro pollutants can be transferred into surface waters. Based on the literature ozonization and the activated carbon processes can eliminate as far as possible micro pollutants. In order to present an ecological alternative, the application potential of microgreen algae in the micro pollutants elimination is investigated in the present work. Against the background of optimal operating conditions for the growth of the microgreen algae, a growth screening with three different culture media with the effluents from three different wastewater treatment plants is being evaluated. Based on the laboratory data, laboratory tests for the degradation behavior of the indicator substances diclofenac, carbamazepine and sulfamethoxazole, as individual substances and mixture in the culture medium with optimal operating conditions, are carried out. The results show that microgreen algae are able to eliminate micro pollutants if micro pollutants are the only carbon source in the media. Furthermore, different influencing parameters as well as optimization variants are analyzed and evaluated. In addition, separation studies as well as possible implementation scenarios are explained in the present work. Based on the newly gained scientific knowledge, the idea of the use of microgreen algae for the elimination of trace substances is promoted.
